...and you need to think about tax in the wider sense e.g. social security charges. Particularly in his country of residence. So he needs good advice there.

The French would most probably treat your client as an french resident auto-entrepreneur.
Not unless they registered as such ! But I agree with the last part about getting French advice.

What you are encountering is the mishmosh that goes on between getting into MTD and authorising sofware.
You can in fact authorise software without getting into MTD and you can get into MTD without authorising software.
From the MTD software point of view being rejected because you are not in MTD is the same as being rejected because you are not authorised.
We know from what you have said that you are not in MTD and in fact you know that.
Some software (eg mine) does run a separate test of authorisations which uses the hello api. I don't know who else does this. That enables identifying when you are authorised, but not in MTD. Otherwise you cannot find this out.
What you need to do now is to wait for an email from HMRC saying you have joined MTD. There is no sense contacting TaxCalc because that is all they can say.
If you don't get the email then chase HMRC (and use Chrome).
I think this sums up just what a dogs breakfast the whole thing is. I barely understand what you are saying and just want a process that works on the browser of my choice. I don't want to have to learn what an api is or what it does, I'm an accountant !

I reckon about 50% of mine get missed by HMRC. I never amend the previous year but just warn the client to let me know if they haven't received the refund after a few weeks and I ring HMRC and get them to manually process the carry-back.

There's an error in HMRC's links that it first takes you to the page for clients to sign themselves up.
Log in with your ASA and it will tell you you're on the wrong page, but it should then redirect you to the right one and let you enter your client's VAT number.
I've not signed anyone up yet so that's as far as I've got.
No, I don't get that. Just links for clients to authorise us (new clients presumably but very vaguely worded), tracking authorisations in progress and linking our existing clients (already done).
As useless as useless thing.

I've tried to do my first client sign-up today (step 5 above). Very early in the process it asks for HMRC login details and takes me to the usual login screen. But no clue as to which login is required :
Our agents account ?
Our ASA ?
Clients tax account ?
I don't think they could have made this more difficult if they tried !

This got me wondering. Is it le income tax or la income tax?
Given the ability of the French administration to extract taxes I think it is 'les' !

Thanks for responding. Odd as I'm still having issues after more than 24 hours and on all devices in our household including a PC and iPad that have never been used to login before.
I'll have to wait for CH to reply.
