She built up Hudson Business Accountants and Advisers from her kitchen table to a small team of flexible workers with independent premises in Nailsea, near Bristol. I went to the consultations and had my moan there a few years ago.
This is the silver lining on the compulsory cloud.

Sounds as though you’re in a good position to pick up more clients as you’ve already prepared your existing client base

Some of the older software companies are still struggling with their MTD offering but Xero and other modern software companies are ready.

I agree that most clients are too busy for those “just touching base” conversations. I also hate being on the receiving end of them from salespeople. It’s not client service, it’s just disruptive.
Like you, our bookkeepers were in touch each month and had enough time to to chat naturally as well as being trained to spot opportunities to help clients. This relationship meant that clients would often contact our bookkeepers with a query that could be passed on to the accountant sitting next to them.

Thanks for the update, Kevin. HMRC have not yet released details of how to claim a digital exemption.
Rebecca Cave has a little more info from the CIOT webinar here
Clients are expected to use their own emails and not the agent’s so it could be interesting for those who have delegated to agents so far. If the agent has been using their own account rather than the client’s then it should be clearer however I know many accountants and bookkeepers who use the client’s gateway to file.

Agent Services Account
For those still unclear how to set up their NEW agent services account (in order to use MTD) the official instructions are here:
As you can see you will need your OLD/CURRENT gateway details in order to set it up.
Whilst I do agree that HMRC should be doing more to inform our clients and unrepresented businesses that doesn’t prevent us from helping our clients to remain compliant.
If anyone wants to be proactive then I’m happy to share the FAQ webinar that we used for our clients and others. It’s a few years old but PM me for the link.

Agreed. Business advice has always been around but now we have new tools. Some use them to do the compliance bit more cheaply/efficiently, we used them to spend time looking forwards, sideways and strategically at the business itself which will make those numbers change.

I loved the variety of work while in industry. In various roles I have had the following managers/teams reporting to me: finance (of course), quality (ISO9000 etc) and data protection, IT (including Y2K responsibility), reception, property maintenance, health and safety, environmental policy (ISO11000 etc), HR and others I can’t remember without checking my CV. Most of it consists of hiring good people and letting them get on with their job.
The role of a Finance Director is much more about strategy and running the company than debits and credits. As such it very different from the role of a management accountant and doesn’t suit everybody.

I'd suggest that it was hype as multipliers are currently falling. I got significantly above the Draper Hinks average for that quarter but who knows what will happen to the market in future years as accountancy moves towards automation and consultancy

Absolutely. My first office overlooked the traffic lights and the £80 I paid for my sign was one of my best marketing investments. Ground floor signage was of vital importance to me when we moved to bigger premises
