Hi @sacksuma - the ICO website is very useful. They've just announced some additional help for small businesses - http://bit.ly/2ghyiNS they also have a really useful 12 step guide to GDPR - well worth a read. Keep an eye open for any updates from your accountancy body.
I hope this helps.

Speed test & what speeds are available
Disclosure: I work for Thomson Reuters - Digita and was also a co-founder of a hosted desktop company.
You'd be surprised with how little bandwidth you'll require without affecting the performance of the programs.
There are a couple of tasks worth doing before making a decision.
Try to run a speed test a few times throughout the day, make a note of the speeds - Download, Upload and PING . http://www.speedtest.net/
A good hosting provider will confirm whether or not those speeds are adequate.
To check what's speeds are available in your area, you can visit - http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/broadband_speed_in_my_area_v2.aspx
Please PM me if you'd like to know anything further as I can give you some good insights in to the differences between the various options.
All the best.

Hi Paul4p - from my knowledge a year or so ago (which is a long time in IT) the HP t510 was a good one - not truly a thin client, but most of the way there. Also added bonus, it can connect to the web even if you can't connect to your virtual server.

For screen sharing
I've recently been introduced to mikogo.com as an alternative to join.me - they offer similar functionality, although Mikogo does seem to offer a little more.

Renting MS Office that's compatible with VT accounts
Hi - there is another possibility. We can rent you MS Office, but it's through a virtual server - so the costs might add up. However working in this was does give you flexible working and the software's not tied to a machine. It's also fully compatible with VT Accounts. You can use Word/Excel etc on your mobile phone if you really wanted to. Please PM me if you'd like to know more.

VoIP for accountants
Hi all - I realise this is an old thread, but I thought it would be useful to share some experiences.
As per Ben's comments, broadband speed is less of an issue now. Although we actively recommend that if you are planning a VoIP installation you have a dedicated broadband line for this service - unless you already have fibre.
With regards remote working, most good voip systems will have apps available for your mobile phone. This means that even if you're not in your office, but you are available you can take calls as if you're in the office.

CRM integrates with Iris, Digita, CCH and others
Taking advantage of your existing data is important for many, as the idea of updating multiple databases is tedious and long winded. Sorry for the plug, but hope some find it interesting. At Hosted Accountants, we have created CRM for accountants that has the potential to integrate with existing server based programs.
I hope this is of interest.
