Holden Associates was established in 2003 and has gone on to grow significantly in size since those early days. Holden Associates was one of the first firm of qualified accountants & business advisers to offer clients 'cloud' bookkeeping software.
There are enough intelligent retired people, unemployed people etc in the country to chose from, choosing someone who runs a business on their own is a typical inconsiderate state approach, those who have likened this to going on holiday is also utter rubbish, going on jury service is not anything like the pleasure of going on holiday for which you plan and look forward too after working hard all year as we do.
As others have said I would explain that being on jury service as a sole trader who is the sole earners and point of contact for clients and HMRC would damage your business and at a time of dare I say it 'third dip recession' surely this should be enough then they can chose from the retired, unemployed or what about civil servants there are enough of them who are already funded from our taxes that we work hard to pay.

PS I am sure I will get stick from some quarters on this, but everyone is entitled to their opinion, it doesn't have to aline with others.
Sorry, but I have to admit I haven't read all the replies, and although your personal life sounds like it has a fair amount of stress, regarding your business life you need to ask yourself "how would I feel working for someone else again in business or practice?".
We all have stress with business, as do our clients, accept it and deal with it, or quit!
Remember though, if you quit you could end up working for some ungrateful and very stressful employer.
I would say you have a perfect chance to actually change what you have, we 'churn' our client list every year, that way we get rid of those who cause the most stress, as a result for the last review we kept all clients.
Look through your list, don't look at it and keep the biggest paying clients but keep the 'best' clients, then sell the rest with your 1 member of staff and moving forward choose clients who you want to work with and reduced stress levels will follow.
Just my thoughts, good luck what ever you decide to do.
Yes the prices have risen, then again what hasn't, however, I used the 'pick n mix' by buying what I needed rather than the unlimited version and it came in under £250 = VAT so still happy :-)
Although we are based in the North West our client bsase is national. What you are seeing is not that it is getting worse but that many sectors are still in the grip of reccession, having never come out of it despite what the politicians would have people believe.
As for London, our clients in London have seen this year pick up considerable, but outside the capital, anything retail based on the highstreet - forget it, it is still in reccession but building contractors, although price adjustment is required to reflect the property market in general, we are seeing those in the building industry (not residential and not one man contractors) are picking up more and more especially in the North East.
So rather than it being grim up north, its not, its certain sectors that are still in reccession while others are doing well. (IMO)

Can I ask, do you find being a JP worthwhile, I have toyed with the idea.

'We act for a legal practice that we have just incorporated.'
I should have read this properly, as UK TAX says if you have already incorporated why the questions now?
Jason
Our Chartered Tax Adviser recently carried out such a valuation for a local legal practice on behalf of advisers who did not know how to do it.
If you want a valuation carrying out let me know.

Softi ScanWiz will reposition a document as double sided and much more, it's inexpensive software.
