The software in question is Taxfiler which I've used for a few months now without any real problems till now. Their support people have been trying to solve the issue and this is done by email - now replied to about a dozen emails asking me to send various screenshots without success.
Ironically the tax liability here will be £65!

There's a lot to be said for checking sentence construction, grammar and spelling before submitting posts. I always read them over out loud.

I Still use my Able Printer stamp for mortgage references etc. It came from Able-Labels and was quite cheap.
Back in the old days of paper tax returns before Self Assessment I had a stamp made with the word "NONE". It made filling in returns a bit less tedious. The local tax office called it the "Convent Stamp".

Must be an age thing! Just seems so ridiculous that you are restricted to just over 17% of the original cost over the first two years and then you can claim the shortfall on disposal in one fell swoop!
Thanks for taking the trouble to respond.

Business Records Check
I've just received one of these letters today. This is the third so far. The first two were for self employed hairdressers. After the clients spoke to the office in Bootle which issued these letters one client had to come to my office when the local tax officer from Edinburgh came to inspect the records. After 20 minutes he agreed that the records were A1 and that his visit had been a total waste of time. The second client's telephone responses eliminated the need for an actual physical inspection.
Hopefully this third client will be able to convince HMRC that a visit would be a waste of time.

Thanks for your input. Unfortunately at the time of completing the 2011/12 return I had not been provided with a copy of the notice of coding and it wasn't until I checked the online facility to view notices of coding much later that it emerged that a change had taken place as previously outlined.
Your solution has worked fine and I expect the repayment of £1349.56 will be issued soon.

Online filing problem
Since posting my original comment I received a call back from Iris Support to point out that the position since the upgrade is correct and as pointed out in previous replies the recording of entries below LEL prior to the upgrade was incorrect! Forms P60 will therefore be incorrect with regard to NI earnings in column 1a where there are weeks where earnings were below LEL prior to the upgrade. Will it really matter?!

P.A.Y.E. underpayment notices
I received two notices recently in respect of clients for whom I prepare payroll. These were for tax year 2003-4. I telephoned Accounts Office Cumbernauld and was advised that they were looking into this situation. I asked if it would be in order to ignore these notices but the reply was non - committal!

Help from DSA
I had a similar case a few years ago and I found it helpful to ask the client to approach the Driving Standards Agency with a view to establishing how many pupils were presented over a year for their test. The DSA provided a full list of tests undertaken under the client's reference number. Your client should know approximately how many lessons were required by each pupil before the test and if any resits were required. Establish if lessons were longer just before the test and how much extra was charged if appropriate. If the driving school car was used on test day this would normally result in an extra charge.

I also experienced difficulty recently with an error message appearing relating to "the address", but not indicating where the problem was located i.e. in the body of HMRC's return or in the attachments.
The online helpdesk advised that the apostrophe which appears in our town - Bo'ness - should be deleted from the online return. This suggestion actually worked, though strangely enough the same address in the attachments didn't cause any problems.
