I have been on the ICO website and apparently I have to give them the chance to put it right first. However they can't put it right because those sales invoices have already been issued. And they cannot amend the email address in bulk because the verification code is needed. I am just really concerned that there are going to be thousands of people that use sage that are going to be effected and are seemingly unaware.
I have already but this will effect every accountant that has an account with sage. If your clients manually entered the email address it is probably ok but if not the Accountants address will be on all their sales invoices. I spoke to 3 Accountants today who were unaware of this issue.
This doesn't surprise me at all. I had one retired gentleman who out of the blue had £38,000 removed from his paye code which meant he only received half of his pension payment that month. Hmrc had created a record for employment for him despite the fact he retired some 11 years earlier. My sisters tax code was sent to my old firm. she works for me but has never worked for my old firm and it was 8 years since I had been a partner there.
They talk about lack of resources but if they just got things right the first time then they wouldn't be spending so much time having to sort out the mess they create. They posted my corporation tax against one of my clients VAT accounts and wrote to him telling him he was due a refund whilst sending me demands and telling me I must of put the wrong reference on.
If you can find a 15 year old that is prepared to work for less than £5.28 per hour please let me know. I found it cheaper to employ an adult than employ my 15 year old daughter who even tried to persuade me I should add vat on top. When I told her she wasn't vat registered her reply was "well are you going to report me?" She was actually very good as an accounts clerk but I couldn't afford her rates!!!
Also why are they sending them out with no information other than the vat registration number? My system can search by utr but not by vat registration short of going through our entire client list on our HMRC account we have no way of knowing which client the notifications are for.
I completed my CTA in 2000 and they were the hardest exams I have sat in my life. I think I studied with BPP which was at the time simply a set of books to go through with the optional odd lecture in Birmingham but I only recall attending 2. However well worth it. I cannot say that my ACCA has been of any practical use in my day to day work - however the CTA is invaluable. Also the tax conferences are fabulous. The lectures are always good but you get just as much if not more from talking to fellow members and learning from their experiences.
My answers
Thank you all at least I know that I am not over-reacting when I am sending my emails to their complaints department

They said that they have done it knowingly due to something that came out of a focus group.
