I shall try again - as you suggest, Sandnickel, avoiding questions I can't answer. Thanks for trying to be helpful. it is clear from the lack of responses to my query (presumably because readers can't see why there is a problem) that I am indeed failing to see the obvious somewhere.
Sandnickel's response was interesting. However, when trying to apply for HMRC AML Supwervision I am asked for my agent code(s). I cannot get registered and obtain such codes unless and until I am AML registered. It obviously is not a closed circle as myriads of agents get going, presumably without difficulty. I am clearly in some way obtuse and cannot see the way through! I am still in "HELP" mode! Incidentally I DO want to file client SA, PAYE RTI, CT and VAT Returns.
If you go to the Additional Settings tab of "Region" settings in Control Panel (assuming it's a Windows machine), you can change the negative number format from "-" to "()" which then feeds into Excel cell formats."
I have tried this (now using Windows 8 - haven't dared turn to Windows 10 yet) and it does not seem to have any impact on Excel at all. What am, I not doing?

I could do with some advice from you. Retiring to France later this year, intending to take my small practice with me. How do I contact you?
