Thanks all.
That's what I thought, but I just wondered if there was anybody out there who'd do it.
He's from Hong Kong, so probably HSBC would be the best bet.
He's also relocating to the UK in a couple of months, so we could set it up when he gets here. It would just have been good to have the account ready when he gets here....
I had exactly the same problem last week. I was bounced from the online services webchat (which is where the error message sends you) to the vat online webchat back to the online webchat again. None of them knew what the problem was. To be fair, though, I rang the VAT helpline, and spoke to a human being who sorted the problem in about 10 seconds flat. Just a pity that I'd spent several hours getting nowhere on the various webchat services.
My question would be why on earth do they ask for figures from the LAST SUBMITTED VAT RETURN when what they really mean is the figures from a random VAT return from about 18 months ago?
Is this really the world class digital tax system that HMRC seems to think that it already is?
Are you making a voluntary disclosure as part of HMRC's operation Edgewood. If so, you can just ask the inspector dealing with the case. The one I've dealt with has been pretty helpful...
Without wishing to be flippant, have you tried getting in in touch with itv (The Bill) as I understand that they used authentic equipment! Also try www.policelot.com/props_equipment.htm who might be able to help - they are film/tv people who have one of these machines on their website. No idea what they cost, mind!
I agree. There are no entries to make on the CT return. HMRC should deal with the s419 repayment/offset automatically, but it's never a bad idea to put it in writing!
The answer to your question is simple - Cost! We're a smallish practice with 5-6 users and I reckon we pay sage upwards of £7k a year.
We use the sage tax suite, CT lite, accounts production, payroll and Line50, and I have to say I have no real issues with the products themselves. I'd say the tax suite is quite intuitive, CT Lite and AP are harder to use, but I've always found the helpline very useful.
It just seems like a big chunk of cash!
To everyone else, thanks for the comments - mixed reviews on Keytime, but sounds like PTP's worth a look.

Great, thanks everybody. Will give that a try on Monday am.
Is it just me, or has the world gone mad??

I've just seen one of these requests myself, from the DoT, no less. Is this a new HMRC initiative?

Not sure about office 365, but I'm sure that you can buy Office 2010 with 3 licences for about £80.
