I do not know if they do this in the U.K. but here in Australia, the chain tax-shops run 12 week 1 night per week training courses in tax preparation. Accountants without practical experience gain a lot from these in terms of being ready to do tax work from the word Go.

I would suggest another reason why auditors fail to audit properly. Would it be that they are afraid of losing the audit if they audit as they should? Clients don't like being "hauled over the coals" and are likely to hit back if they are.

What is often overlooked is that unregulated unqualified tax agents are often preferred by taxpayers for obvious reasons.

I was under the impression that the Big 4 ceased combining audit with other services after the Endron affair but they started up a few later combining audit with other services. It now seems the wheel has turned further and they have again stopped combining audit with other services.

"He who pays the piper calls the tune". Tax advisers, auditors and accountants can never adequately protect themselves from the pressures brought to bear by their paymasters. It is naive to think otherwise.

A person beginning a public accountant'/s office would be very surprised by your cagorisation of accounting jobs "Generally, the four accounting specialisms are:

Financial accounting
Management accounting
Internal auditing
Group accounting"
