I have now resolved the issue. I thought this may be of some use to other practices, that under Making Tax Digital for VAT businesses need to grant permission for their accounts software providers to access their HMRC data and this permission must be updated every 18 months. I wish Xero support had told me this hours ago.
If you receive a 'Needs attention' message and cannot access outstanding VAT returns with HMRC, use the connect to HMRC button and grant authority and this will restore access for a further 18 months. You do not have to do this with every client, just one.
Hi, many thanks for your response. It is for all of our clients. We can connect to our Agency Account and can see all our clients there and past VAT returns. Xero however does not show the current return to be submitted. We are at a loss.
