...........but what to do in current year? Great. Thanks for info. Looks like potential to defend dividends already paid, if it comes to it. But what about current/future years? I'd like to avoid publishing accounts with negative retained profits as it seems to make situation a more likely target for enquiry. Any creative ideas on balance sheet management if client doesn't want to reduce dividends or vary their timing?
I'd go for Moneysoft too Moneysoft Payroll Manager is an excellent, easy to use package. Why do it manually when you take out the pain for £100. Again, I'm just a satified customer - not looking commission!
You could fill in the current year data retrospectively, quite quickly then you could get all the year end returns out of the system automatically saving a lot of time at year end.

NI OK but mileage?
Thanks for prompts on NI; I've got that covered.
But what about mileage for these "hybids" who pay NI as an employee but, by concession, tax as SE.
I thought mileage could be OK as it would be for, say, a self employed consultant, based at home, but travelling to work at a client's office?
With 20,000+ sub post offices there must be a standard approach but what is it?
Thanks - shortlist down to two
Thanks for all the ideas.
My shortlist is down to VT and Moneysoft. VT is £100 more up front with potential ongoing costs of £150+ pa (optional for upgrades).
Main benefit seems that it will produce accounts compliant with FRSSE rather than me having to use a compliance checklist etc.
I may pay the extra for the convenience and comfort of knowing I havn't overlooked a disclosure requirement.
Any further thoughts from readers welcome.
