Receipt processing is definitely the way to go
We've been using Receipt Bank alongside Xero and Freeagent with our clients for 18 months now. They absolutely love it and almost every client that I show it to, signs up there and then! It is so worth it for £9 per month and the iphone App is wonderful - I love the fact that I can enter my expense for train travel whilst I`m waiting for the train to arrive! There are so many easy ways to get receipts to Receipt Bank, including getting suppliers to email the invoices direct.
I think Receipt processing will definitely replace the transactional part of book-keeping in the future so that book-keepers can concentrate on producing clear and informative management accounts for businesses so that they really have a handle on their business performance.
P.S. I can't be the only one who thinks Receipt Bank are good as they have won Xero Add-on partner of the year for two years running in UK and they won in Australia this year too!

Love your website
I absolutely love your website and you really embrace the same culture that I also want to inject into accountancy.
The T-shirts are fab too! We`re still in early stages of our set-up but I take real inspiration from your website & your awards, that we will become a "grown-up", profit-making business too!

I set-up my practice in 2009 and have spent the last four years selecting, trialling, implementing and integrating high-end software and systems, as well as growing my practice & family! I now use fully integrated accounts software combined with a document management system on a hosted desktop system which has really made our team and work processes so efficient.
Through a company that I have set up with my husband, we are shortly about to release shared access to this integrated system (including associated workflows) to small accountants for a low monthly cost, with the accounts software priced on a per client basis.
We are aiming to get top-end IT solutions available to the very smallest accountancy practices. There'll then be other services we can get more cheaply on top, by bulk-buying training credits, outsourcing arrangements and admin support to name just a few things...
Interested? Please get in touch with us by sending me a message.

You'll know when it's right to go back!
I've got two children (girl now 4 and boy now 2) and I was working firstly as a partner and then as a sole practitioner (when my son was born).
I took about 3 months maternity leave with each of them, which felt about right for me as I was starting to get bored then. With my first child, the grandmothers looked after her for the first month until I was confident about leaving her with another person. With my second child, I had no cover for my clients during the whole maternity leave (as it was only part-time practice) but they were all very understanding if I was a bit slow replying to email and obviously I wasn't doing any accounts work.
Enjoy your new arrival for as long as you are enjoying her and then start new challenges as and when you need to!

Replying to your direct mail
Hi Lilac1, I can't reply to your direct mail as the system says that I'm blocked from replying to you for some reason?! To see where we're based, see www.pillowmay.co.uk although I'm not sure since we'd be working on the cloud whether it is actually relevant that all the accountants are local! It's still early in the development of my ideas for sharing IT - will be working on them more in February 2013 once we're through the busy season! Do contact me if you'd like to hear more ...

I fully emphasise with all your comments having set up my practice just after the birth of my first child.
I couldn't stay at home with the kids all day, much as I love them as I enjoy the interaction with businesses & the working routine.
I believe good software & systems is one of the answers to a good work-life balance (although I'm not there yet)!
My aim next year is to join together local part-time accountants & offer IT & admin systems (through a hosted system) on a per client cost basis so Mum accountancy practices (in particular but not exclusively) spend more time doing the higher level & higher value work without getting tied down in all the rest of the admin which comes with running a practice.
If anyone likes this idea, do get in touch!

I agree with this so how do hosted providers counter this?
I would really like to hear some strong arguments from the hosted solutions providers to better having your "own cloud" other than the obvious (& not insubstantial) cost of maintaining the IT hardware and software.
I work in a rural office and in my last practice (also rural), we quickly ran out of bandwidth with a "local cloud" and also VOIP phones as the practice grew in numbers. Therefore, I would be hesitant to rely on hosted solutions due to the size restraint of current bandwidths. There were also sometimes connectivity issues although actually not that frequently but it was still handy to be able to drive 20 mins down the road when this did happen and log on physically to continue work.

Even more impressed with Digita
I was the original anonymous replier about Digita. I attended their conference last week and I have to say I'm now even more impressed with Digita.
They really do listen to their customers and the improvements that they have put in over the past year are incredible. Plus the improvements that they expect to add this year will make huge differences again to their products.
One really notable example is the addition to their personal tax suite called "tax exchange" which should allow clients to fill in an electronic information request form which can then be fed directly into the personal tax product without manual input. I can see that saving quite a bit of time with my clients, who are already used to completing an electronic online information request form on my website.

IT problems and working from home
I've been working from home ever since I qualified as an accountant. I love it as I found the office working environment rather stressful (especially internal office politics!).
However, you do need fantastic IT support which can nowadays be provided remotely, to stop you throwing the PC out of the window when it goes wrong! My IT support guys are on the end of the phone all day long and are just so patient! They normally have me up and running again very quickly. I wouldn't consider running my business without them.
