I found that they will accept a copy of the VAT Registration Certificate along with a copy of the last return. It is relatively easy to check a VAT No is genuine.

That may not be the case. I know of one instance, with a garage using a mechanic who was treated as self-employed. HMRC reworked all his earnings as employment, but did not refund the tax to the employee. They did, however, deduct the total received from the mechanic from the garage's liability.

I also use Veriphy. But ensure that you have all the correct data. A client transposed some figures he gave me, and I had to have three attempts before I succeeded. Each attempt counts as a separate search!

Yes, I agree. ICAEW is a very pusillanimous body.

Some years ago, there was a lady who opened a shop in Kent and called it " 'arrods".
The Knightsbridge store brought out their highly-paid learned friends and sent her a 'Cease and Desist' notice. She changed the name to "Not 'arrods" and there was nothing the store could do about it. It provided all with a good laugh!

Test the water by talking to an employment agency. That should give you a rough idea of what the going rate is.

Thanks to all who replied. I think I had better see what the abortive costs comprised. And I agree, the article 'the' sale is crucial. If there was no disposal, then the abortive costs died with the negotiations.

But if he believes that the stock is available at a lower price and/or may not be available after the lock-down ends, is he not saving his business? Which, as I understand it is the duty of every director.

I suggest you sharpen your IT skills at the same time. Very nearly all aspects of Accountancy require a good knowledge of Excel, specially as all software is based on that. You can teach yourself a great deal from YouTube etc, but I would recommend you sign up to the Excel Community at the ICAEW (https://www.icaew.com/groups-and-networks/faculties/excel-community). And good luck!

Amazon now has a number of suppliers who state that the goods will be supplied 'from UK stock', but when you have ordered, you find that it will take up to 6 weeks to receive the goods. I call this sharp practice. And Amazon does nothing to police that, as it is more income for Bezos. I now shop less and less there - 5 purchases in 2019, 2 this year.
