I've just been told by the Agent Helpline that a few taxpayer records haven't been carried over into 2017/18 and won't be until their 2017/18 tax return is received. For my client the HMRC website shows the 2016/17 situation properly but isn't showing any payments on account and isn't issuing a statement. Apparently he isn't expected to make any payments on account and they won't charge him any interest but I'm not sure I believe that!

We had exactly the same thing and were told by HMRC to complete CA8421 showing the rental income as self-employment. We weren't able to download the form from HMRC but a helpful person at NIC emailed one to us and we returned it to the NIC & EO central address. It took a couple of months but the form A1 did arrive and the Portuguese tax authorities were happy with it.

One of our client's was sent a UTR letter in October completely out of the blue as she's been self-employed, and we've been submitting her returns, for years. We thought it was a blip and called the agent helpline who couldn't see any reason why it had been sent and said they'd cancel it. This week she's received a letter from HMRC saying that as she was self-employed she would need to pay Class 2 and they'd be setting her up with a new UTR for her self-assessment returns. Another call to the agent helpline and it seems they didn't cancel the other new UTR let alone any possible third one. They also had the gall to tell me they didn't have our agent authority because I gave her national insurance number and it took them straight to UTR number two instead of the one she's been using all along! I wonder if this is a result of the change to payment of Class 2 although she's the only one - so far.......

VAT Compliance Diploma
Try the VAT Compliance Diploma. It used to be run by the IIT but since they merged with CIOT it seems to be called the AAT VAT Compliance Diploma. It was a very useful course and all done online so easy to fit in.

We had a professional courtesy letter come back saying "We wish you every success with the relationship"! No problem so far but I am now wary!

I recently had a version of this where the caller tried to tell me that my teenage son had paid around £200 to them for some kind of virus protection and now they've been told that they shouldn't have charged it they want to repay him! I tried repeatedly to tell him that my son can't have done this because he had no means of paying and even resorted to shouting into the phone that my son is a minor. I hung up when the caller asked me what my son's job had to do with it!

The trouble is that now all the things I put aside in January to concentrate on tax returns have started to become urgent themselves!

Using bank statements as records
One of my clients uses his bank statements as his records and so everything that goes out was included in purchases for VAT even (especially) his own drawings and he just worked out the 20% and claimed it in his returns! As I get no explanations I spend a lot of time googling company names to find out whether the expense could be business so I now know that porn[***][***] channels use an innocuous sounding business name presumably so your bank manager/accountant/spouse don't know what you're paying for!

I have a to do list on a word document. It's split into short, medium and long jobs plus pending and admin. If I'm in a bad mood I can just whiz through the short jobs and get the satisfaction of crossing them off the list! Unfortunately the admin section just keeps growing!
