If we are the Customer and we have multiple accounts with the Group Supplier wouldn't our ledgers be "messy" in that the funds from Company A appear to be mixed in with Company B.
It seems a to me to be less messy if the funds are returned. As I will then question my records, and I am then more likely not to repeat the error, thus improving the efficiency of both myself and the supplier.
On that basis I lean towards Option 2 as I trust the customer base - after all I have vetted them previously.
Caveat - depends on the amount an frequency of billing.
