Was registered for VAT earlier this year apparently.
And did a very good job on the shirts !

Thanks for your reply - as far I'm aware I correctly followed the instructions provided by Sage but it hasn't worked.
Am still awaiting a response from them.

An update on this one.
I wrote to HMRC in early Jan to appeal the penalties, never received a reply, indeed only correspondence was a further £300 penalty at the end of Feb.
However, over the weekend I received from HMRC a SA302 for 15/16 dated 5 March 2019, no income on it, and having checked online all the penalties have been cancelled !
No correspondence to me or my client confirming the situation but seems it's been resolved internally by HMRC - I have taken screen prints etc just to be on the safe side.

Many thanks for your reply.

Previous accountant come straight back to me and advises the only SA's they did were for 16/17 and 17/18 - there was no handover from previous accountant so brand new client.
They were unaware of any notice to file or penalties issued - would have filed if they had been aware.

Just one more thing - I've got a letter dated 5/12/18 from my HMRC to my client.
It says "as you submitted your 14/15 return against reference "old UTR" the interest is due as you paid your 14/15 liability late.
Client says he's never filed a SA return for that year, and HMRC this morning told me the notice to file for that year was withdrawn, so I don't know what to think !!

Just a quick update.
Rang HMRC this morning again, trying to work out exactly what I'm dealing with.
For whatever reason my client has had 2 UTR's (the penalties have arisen under the new one).
Previous UTR number - a notice to file for 14/15 was issued and then subsequently cancelled.
No notice to file was issued under this UTR for 15/16, they are in the process of closing this duplicate record apparently.
Looking on my client details on HMRC, the 15/16 and 16/17 notices to file were both issued on 12/10/17 (presumably the date that the new UTR was created)
The 16/17 return was filed on 31/01/18.
I'm guessing Oct 2017 was when the previous accountant registered client for SA - have emailed them to ask if they have any information which may assist.
Thanks for the comments and advice on the letter I need to send in, I'll get it drafted before I finish tomorrow and see where this goes.
Does anyone have the address for the HMRC @rse and elbows department ?

Hi, thanks for the quick response.
I wasn't minded to file the return until I'd tried to get it withdrawn so I will send a letter in before Christmas.
I don't know whether or not chase letters were received, it is possible - he's not communicated with me that he's received penalty notices, I only picked these up when I went to check that 17/18 return had been filed by previous accountant.
I collect the paperwork from his business every month or so for bookkeeping / VAT and there's been nothing in amongst that.
Anyway, I'm happy to put my letter in - will update here in due course.
