Thanks Hugo. The issue cropped up this afternoon and I realised that I had a gap in my knowledge. After posting the question I did a search on accounting web and found an article pretty much saying exactly what you have said. I bet that this is something that quite a few accountants don't know, me included until this evening. Thanks again for your help
Hi Les. They are certainly commercial. I tend to assume the activities of a business are subject to VAT unless I can find evidence to say that they are exempt.
Thanks spilly. A prospective client is placing people that want to be trained with training providers. They are convinced that they are exempt from VAT because someone they used to know claimed to be exempt. My response was that you need to be close to 100% sure rather than relying on what they have been told. I have also explained that they are placing trainees rather than training people.
Hi. You can try contacting them again . unfortunately it is difficult to force an uncooperative accountant to co-operate. You can request that Companies House send an authentication code to the registered office and request HMRC to send the corporation tax unique taxpayer reference to the registered office. Once authorised as agent to deal with corporation tax you can request copies of the last return to be sent to you but HMRC may refuse to send to the agent and send to the client instead.
Without the assistance of the previous accountant. You might end up having to recreate the information yourself. Hard and frustrating work but you might not have any choice in the matter and in the long term it might save time.
My answers
Hi Wilson. I meant asking not to be paid and you shouldn't do that. Thanks
