It would be a very expensive procedure along with endless penalties if solicitors were responsible. I have a client who is waiting for an inheritance pay out. Only estate income is the tax due on capital of around £350k. Client is still waiting two years after probate was granted and solicitors have instructed accountants who are charging extortionate fees (£1k plus vat per year )to prepare the estate tax returns.

Helen, I would agree with you if Mr Ellison was running a full time practice but apparently he is part time which suggests to me that he is building up a practice whilst still working. Interested that you manage to practice without membership of any body. Assume that you are registered for money laundering with HMRC. What about references etc. I think of resigning everytime the renewal notice arrives but I would feel strange describing myself as an accountant if I resigned but as you say who cares.

High risk !!! £4k .Further evidence that the institutes are not interested in the small practitioner.
All those years of study wasted . Could even mean that he loses his job as I assume that he is working at the same time as trying to build up a practice.

The thing that saddens me is the difference the way that small firms of accountants are treated compared with the "big practices " who make the most horrendous mistakes and carry on regardless. I have just read an audit report which in effect denies all responsibility for the contents of the accounts.

The more I read of these cases the more I think "but for the grace of God".
I echo that.

I can visual the scene demanding client, information not available to provide what was required, accountant stressed gives into clients demands. Bank who already have enough information from their own records use accountants letter as a reason to reject the loan. Accountant gets the blame. I know where my sympathies lie and the fine and costs awarded are totally wrong.

With respect to Gillian Hyde it is clear that she is in some sort of mental breakdown. In particular after 30 years clean record. This should have been considered on initial visits and less pressure put on her e.g. produce by 4pm. Anybody who has suffered stress knows the worst thing anybody can say is hurry up with this info. As for poor Rauf it should have been taken into account that he was trying to put the record straight.

I would hope to make more than 100K on a turnover of £750k. but this raises an important point: Is bigger better ?
I am sure that many S.P.'s are making a £100k on fees of £150K.

I think it is a great pity that the opportunities section was removed from this site. It gave people a chance to buy and sell at little cost and was useful for exchange of smaller practices or blocks of fees. This article is useful but there are so many other considerations. How will payments be made i.e 33% initial. What happens when clients do not like buyer. Run over p.i. WIP just to mention a few points.
