What AccountingWEB says
Clear Books is one of several independent UK developers working to carve out a niche for itself in the face of marketing onslaughts from Xero and QuickBooks. Rather than pursuing their growth-first strategies Clear Books CEO Ruth Fouracre has charted a different course since she took over in 2018. Instead, the developer is focusing on customer needs, product quality and support to ensure it remains a profitable, sustainable business.
There is another factor affecting suppliers in this field: Making Tax Digital (MTD). Whether large or small, all small business accounting software developers had to shift resources into creating MTD-compatible products and Clear Books is no exception. It build Micro and Practice Editions for MTD during 2016-17, but could not push on as quickly with enhancements to the core product during that time.
Under MTD Clear Books can cater both for spreadsheet users and those with basic bookkeeping skills (Clear Books Micro) as well as the accountants who work with these kinds of clients (Clear Books Practice Edition). While it has set the pace with MTD-compatible tools, Clear Books now needs to use that advantage to solidify its position in the market.
