What AccountingWEB says

It’s been a very tough year for Sage, with a revolving door of executive changes and a loss of focus on some of its core UK brands.

Confusion around product branding may have depressed Sage’s results in this year’s software survey. The company’s flagship program, formerly known as Sage 50 Accounts, has re-emerged as Sage 50cloud Accounts to illustrate its online data storage capabilities.

But the name change can’t obscure the impact of the cloud revolution on Sage’s mainstay accounting application. With HMRC signalling its intentions for making tax digital, small businesses and practitioners have drifted away from the desktop. That has reduced Sage 50’s share of the overall small business accounts population and seen it become more of a mid-market accounting platform, where it continues to support a network of third party programs.

As the training foundation for many accountants and bookkeepers Sage 50 is still woven into the fabric of the UK profession, but that hold is visibly weakening. That process may be accelerated by in-house developments, where features that set the desktop program apart are being written into the restyled Sage Business Cloud Accounting app.
