The January 31 SA filing deadline is unaffected by today's large scale strike of civil servants, according to HMRC's press office.

It says that the network of Enquiry Centres across the country will be open to receive tax returns and help make emergency tax credit payments.

Paul Gray, chairman of HMRC said:

"We are determined to provide the best level of service possible to the public tomorrow. I see no reason for the strike action. We have already confirmed to the PCS that we have a policy of no compulsory redundancies or staff moves that involve a move of home until at least September 2007 and there are no plans for further outsourcing. We have a three year pay deal in place which was agreed by the unions in 2005. We will of course continue to work closely with all the Department's trade unions on issues affecting our employees."

As a side issue, the press release also assures that "protecting the UK's frontiers is a top priority for HMRC and plans are in place to ensure that our vigilant approach is maintained at the highest possible level at ports and airports".
