Geoff and Diana Jones, the couple who have taken their appeal against an HMRC settlements ruling to the House of Lords, were this week hailed as the tax personalities of the year at the LexisNexis Taxation Awards 2006.

The announcement drew a hearty cheer from more than 700 tax luminaries at the award dinner in London on Wednesday 24 May.

Former CIOT president Richard Mannion was another popular choice for a lifetime achievement award. The judging panel, led by ICAEW Tax faculty chair Francesca Lagerberg, praised the effort Mannion put into initiatives such as Working Together to help bring the profession's operational concerns to the HMRC's attention. His nomination was supported by HMRC chairman Sir David Varney, MPs and recognised tax experts, the panel said.

Digita Taxability Pro won the best tax software prize, beating the same developer's CoTax Pro, CCH and last year's winner, Tax Tips and Tools 5 from BBS Software/The 2020 Group. Also among the runners-up was AccountingWEB contributor Rebecca Benneyworth, a nominee in the best tax lecturer category.

The other winners were:
Best small firm tax team Robert James Partnership

Well Deserved
The couple well deserved an award for the hell that they have gone through and took a stand on an rather ambiguious taxation issue. The couple have my admiration.
