A husband and wife have been sentenced at the Old Bailey for attempting to steal £220,000 through a complex VAT fraud involving designer goods.
Chelsea-based Emmanuel and Behnaz Scotts were sentenced to four-and-half-years and 51 weeks (suspended for two years, a supervision order for 12 months and a tagged curfew for four months) respectively, for “intent to defraud HMRC and handling the proceeds of crime”.
HMRC caught up with the couple after they spent their money on a £1.8m Chelsea penthouse, private schooling for their children and gambling at high-end casinos.
