As part of its increasingly internet-savvy approach to communicating with agents, HMRC has opened a YouTube channel featuring educational videos, according to its Agent Update 23 (650kb PDF).

The HMRC YouTube channel has been running for several months as part of its Learning Together programme and currently features two 10-minute films explaining the workings of the new penalties for inaccuracies regime. The channel is accompanied by similar sites for, the Treasury  and the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills.

The latest Agent Update also heralds an overhaul for the Agent pages on HMRC’s website. The layout has been simplified so that links to technical material is easier to find , along with signposts to news, help materials and tools such as the Agent toolkits and a new tax calendar (PDF download).

On first sight, it looks like a significant improvement, with links to most of the relevant pages an adviser might want to check. As part of a longer term overhaul, advisory material for businesses is being reorganised on the website.

Elsewhere, Agent Update 23 provides further information on recent developments including:

  •  Plumbers Tax Safe Plan
  •  Late filing, payment and inaccuracy penalties
  •  Gift Aid – new forms to register and claim tax reliefs
  •  Employer NICs holiday update
  • Disclosure of Inheritance Tax avoidance schemes
  • Recent Customs and VAT briefs
