Rebecca Cave recognised at Accounting Excellence Awards

by

Rebecca Cave accepted the John Stokdyk Outstanding Contribution Award yesterday evening at the 2023 Accounting Excellence Awards. She had worked for 35 years in the tax world before closing her tax manuals for the last time this summer.

AccountingWEB’s longtime tax editor was awarded the prestigious recognition at the end of the evening after she retired from the world of tax earlier this summer.

Rebecca was presented the award on stage at London’s Roundhouse by AccountingWEB’s Joanne Birtwistle and Richard Hattersley, the evening’s host Tom Allen and Nick Williams from the event’s headline sponsor Intuit QuickBooks (pictured above).

A tribute to John Stokdyk

Accepting the award, Rebecca reflected on her career in tax and also paid tribute to AccountingWEB icon John Stokdyk, remembering his warmth and the role he played in her journalism career.

Earlier in the night, the Outstanding Contribution award was renamed after John, who sadly passed away in June.

It was fitting then that Rebecca picked up the award named in tribute to John, having worked closely with him for many years.

John and Rebecca’s paths first crossed when she started writing for AccountingWEB in 2000 before he recruited her in 2014 to become AccountingWEB’s tax editor.

She held this position for almost a decade, and worked closely with the AccountingWEB team in setting the news agenda.

Rebecca's impact

She covered everything from the inception of Making Tax Digital (and every delay along the way), the tax implications of Brexit, 12 Budgets (including the mini-Budget) and much more.

Displaying a keen eye for the news and issues that will affect our readers most, Rebecca’s articles would regularly top the tables of our ‘best read’ articles list.

Throughout all her articles as AccountingWEB’s tax editor, Rebecca showcased the rare combination of writing ability, expertise and a passion for helping others navigate the increasingly complex tax landscape - and holding HMRC to account.

Asked whether she will miss tax in her retirement, Rebecca answered with a resounding “no”. Rebecca officially passed the tax editor baton to Amy Chin at the end of August and she is now enjoying a busy retirement in local politics, aside from writing the occasional AccountingWEB article.

But there is nobody better to summarise Rebecca’s contributions than the people she helped the most - the AccountingWEB readers. When news of her retirement broke in June, a regular commenter said: “It's too easy to keep on moving to the next item, without taking the time to reflect on all the help that Rebecca has provided over the years… Clear, accessible, focussed and without fear of mandarins ... a tough act to follow, so thanks.”

The AccountingWEB team would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Rebecca and we wish you the happiest of retirements.

Well done RC! Very well deserved (unlike most of these awards).

Very well deserved, I have learnt a huge amount from Rebecca's articles over the year, and is a very talented and knowledgeable writer.

They have always been a "must read" article on this site.

Well deserved Rebecca.

Your style of writing is always relevant, unbiased and to the point and often reflected the way that many of us were thinking. I hope you will find the time to write a few more articles in the future.

A thoroughly well-deserved award. I agree with the other comments: Rebecca’s articles always stood out as well written, fair-minded but ruthless when necessary and very knowledgeable.
