McDonnell blasts Chancellor’s NIC u-turn

John McDonnell said the chancellor must make clear how he will fill the £2bn black hole in the Budget after yesterday’s u-turn on the national insurance hike for the self employed.

The shadow chancellor continued in a Guardian opinion piece that the hike was “grossly unfair” and the measure shows how “out of touch” the government was for low and middle earners. “Perhaps if Hammond – a millionaire – had spent a little more time thinking about the consequences, and a little less time writing jokes for his budget speech, he would have realised this,” McDonnell wrote.

McDonnell used the article to question where Hammond will find the £2bn gap in his Budget which was intended for social care funding. “Social care under the Tories has already suffered from £4.6bn of cuts, leaving the system on the brink of collapse, with more than a million frail and elderly people being denied access to the care they need”

Neymar claims partial tax victory

Neymar has claimed a partial victory at the Brazilian tax appeals court after it ruled that the Barcelona striker could cede his image rights to family businesses, reports Sky sports.

The initial ruling which dismissed the charges by federal auditors has halved the £52m penalty in fines and back taxes sought by the Brazilian tax office. However, Neymar still faces charges of evading Brazilian tax triggered by his Barcelona transfer.

Any Answers: Being Proactive

“What does proactive mean? What actions would be perceived by clients as proactive?”

AccountingWEB regular FirstTab asked this question after receiving a call from a potential client who wants to leave his current accountant because they are not proactive.

When FirstTab asked how the accountant is not proactive, the potential client explained that he does not hear from them often enough and when he only gets an email response towards the end of the same day.

While FirstTab didn’t think the accountant was doing anything wrong in their service, AccountingWEB member Marks added ways for the accountant to be more proactive:

Give the client information that is relevant to them without being asked
Give the client added value

“If the potential client doesnt feel that their current accountant are proactive then ask what he would think being proactive would involve (as everyone has a different interpretation of what being "proactive" means),” he said.
