Driven by its legion of loyal small business users, FreeAgent has beaten much bigger rivals to the expenses capture app award this year. The size of the FreeAgent vote squeezed out marginal contenders in this category, leaving just three suppliers with more than a 2.5% share of the votes cast. This category has very clearly been consolidating during a period of rapid growth.

Use of data capture and expense management apps has more than doubled over the past three years on the back of Making Tax Digital. As accountants embraced the technology, the category has consolidated. Xero acquired Hubdoc to boost its data capture capabilities and Sage snapped up AutoEntry to ensure it had a presence in this market.

FreeAgent enjoys a unique position as the house accounting app for the NatWest Group and has propspered from an infusion of new, small business users.

While Xero, Sage and QuickBooks all feature built-in expense capture tools within their accounting engines, these did not show up in any significant numbers in this year's vote. Their absence leaves Dext as the only dedicated player of note in this sector of the accounting ecosystem.
