The transition of accountancy from desktop to cloud software systems is still in progress, but the momentum is building behind the online movement in this year’s AccountingWEB software survey.

There may have been a few things on accountants’ minds in recent months, but voting for the Accounting Excellence Software Awards has been taking place since May. With nearly 3,000 products rated so far, cloud users are in the majority, particularly in the small business accounting category, where 97% are cloud users.

The race for dominance within the AccountingWEB community has traditionally involved Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent. After falling behind Xero last year, FreeAgent has bounced back significantly, while QuickBooks Online and the previous market leader, Sage 50 Accounts, have both lost ground compared to previous years.

Sage customers have been thin on the ground so far this year across many of the categories in which it competes, including mid-market and enterprise accounting, where last year’s cloud-based winner, AccountsIQ, continues to set the pace. It is currently left to a resurgent Pegasus Opera 3 to fly the flag for the traditional wing in the market larger accounting software users.

Practice software races

As has been the case for years, practice software is more closely aligned to desktop PCs, but the balance is changing there too. With Taxfiler and GoSimpleTax leading the way, nearly 60% of the tax applications rated so far are online tools.

Thanks to the continuing popularity of BTCSoftware, TaxCalc and VT Final Accounts, accounts production is slightly behind on the transition to cloud systems, and hovering just around the 50:50 mark. The practice management category, however, is even more heavily weighted towards cloud applications, with 84% of respondents in that category registering votes for the likes of AccountancyManager, Senta, Capium and Karbon HQ.
