Simon Hurst takes a peek at Microsoft's efforts to develop apps for office. Is this just a rebranding exercise to dust add-ins with the latest industry buzz, or a spreadsheet revolution, he wonders.

Anyone who has looked at the Excel 2013 preview or is working with the release version as part of a volume licencing arrangement may have spotted the new Apps for Office command in the INSERT ribbon tab. If ‘Apps’ makes you think ‘Excel on a Smartphone’, then I’m afraid it’s not that sort of app. Office Apps for Excel are much closer in concept to the existing Excel Add-Ins than Angry Birds, in that they add features and capabilities to your existing Excel application rather than liberating it from your desktop.
