After the crises of Covid-19, Brexit and Making Tax Digital (MTD) and ahead of the usual January self assessment rush, the AccountingWEB Live Expo on 1-2 December gives exhibitors and delegates a chance to catch up on some of the things that were left on the back burner for the past 18 months.

Software developers made it clear last week that MTD had a deadening effect on product innovation. Many accountants probably feel the same way about some of the improvements they’ve been considering for their firms. Now that the government has granted an extra 12 months to implement MTD for income tax, there’s an opportunity to move forward on some of those fronts.

If you’ve got some pressing technology decisions to make, or just want to catch up with the latest trends, the Expo is a great place to find out more.

Practice automation

Somewhat like Chancellors, software companies get very coy ahead of their big grandstand announcements. But they also can’t resist dropping a few hints ahead of time. From what we’ve heard on the grapevine, big things are expected from some of the best known names in tax and practice software.

Fresh from its acquisition of GoProposal, Sage is promising to reveal the long-awaited secrets of its #BossIt campaign that promises to revolutionise accountancy on stand E1. Regular AccountingWEB panellist Chris Downing will be hosting a live MTD Bootcamp on the latest news and guidance and there will be a Sage tech workshop offering practical walkthroughs of all its new services. All these sessions will give attendees CPD points.

BTCSoftware (stand C12) is moving into practice automation in partnership with Pixie, a cloud app that can transform client communications and workflow management. The company will also be previewing long-awaited improvements to its compliance tools and has been hinting about “exciting new services” in the pipeline. BTCSoftware also be hosting a tech workshop with CPD points.

TaxCalc (stand D10) will be demonstrating their new practice management solution that helps you work smarter, faster and be more organised, as well as other new developments to help future-proof your practice. As well as CPD points available from their tech talk, attendees can hear from the TaxCalc team on our expert panel debates at Live Expo.

IRIS (stand F1) will have product experts on hand to highlight the way their software can help your practice. Whether you’re a potential or existing customer they’ll show you how time-saving tools such as OpenSpace can simplify and speed up client approvals and answer any questions you may have about the software. As well as a tech talk with CPD points available, Steve Cox from IRIS will also be taking part in an MTD Bootcamp debate with Rebecca Benneyworth.

Silverfin (stand C1) who recently announced the acquisition of machine learning and AI expert Boltzmann, will be explaining the benefits that combining Silverfin with machine learning from their Ludwig Assistant has on practice productivity and the ability to deliver advisory services and valuable insights to clients. They will also have insights available from their second annual technology trends report and will be hosting a CPD qualifying tech talk at the show.

New tax tools

Xero (stand E10) will be showing off the biggest product launch of 2021 (so far) with its new Personal Tax module. Available free to accountant partners as part of Xero Tax, it is accompanied by accounts production, corporation tax and practice management tools within the Xero HQ portfolio. Self assessment season may never be the same for some smaller practitioners. Xero will also be sharing the results of its annual benchmarking survey and letting firms see how they measure up against the competition. There will also be CPD points available from Xero tech workshop session, and its experts will be part of sessions including The future of accountancy and Why Fintech matters to you in 2022.

FreeAgent (stand E20) will be featuring the latest developments on its powerful end-to-end accounting solution designed to simplify the admin associated with your smaller clients especially with MTD looming. There will also be a tech talk, with CPD points available, where Kris Sawford will explain how digital record keeping can enhance your client relationships.

New kids on the block

As well as more established firms, Live Expo will be an opportunity to hear from exciting new vendors on the latest technology and services to streamline your practice. You can meet with the likes of Comma (stand D21), new entrants to the Fintech space, with their new Open Banking enabled bulk payment solution, that can allow accountants to batch up payroll payments for clients and save time and effort.

StreemConnect (stand B1) will also be showing off its new Open Banking-enabled solution to iron out issues when importing bank feeds into accounting software. Producing better quality data pays off in tax preparation, audit work and other areas.

PensionSync (stand C20), the innovative payroll and pension data platform will be on hand with what it calls the UK’s only one-stop shop for payroll-to-pension administration, working alongside your payroll software to provide a single pension process across six major UK pension schemes.
