Microsoft executives revealed this week that with the next release of the Office suite, users will be able to save their files in Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF).
Suddenly, it seems, personal productivity programs are hot news. On Tuesday Sun released version 8 of its StarOffice 8 suite and announced that it was joining forces with Google to challenge Microsoft Office.
The timing may have been purely coincidental, but Microsoft senior vice president Steven Sinofsky demonstrated the new PDF functionality at a meeting of Microsoft "MVPs" on Saturday 1 October as rumours swirled around Silicon Valley around Sun and Google's StarOffice tie up.
