<b>Pivot Tip 18</b> - Date problem: 'Cannot group that selection'

ExcelZone's Five Minute Tips aim to develop your skill at using Excel pivot tables. To test these formating tips for yourself, try them out on your copy of the pivot_practice.xls database.

One great feature of pivot tables is their ability to group dates into monthly or weekly totals. But if even just one out of 10,000 or 20,000 date fields is faulty, the Group function refuses to work. If you try to group a row of dates and get the message "Cannot Group that Selection", it means that one or more of your dates is faulty.

Check for faulty dates by sorting the database into date order. Any faulty dates will be found in the first and last rows. Once you have corrected the faulty dates, go into the pivot table and press the Refresh Data button. But you will have to refresh the data TWI...

Sadly, this is quite an old article, and ExcelZone and the Excel spreadsheet example mentioned here are no longer on the website.... I was looking at it out of personal interest, too.

Can you make the links work?

I have over three weeks tried to use these articles to help my knowledge of Excel. References to several files which I expect have the Excel files relating to the points in the article.

If there is no connection to these files then I think your Accounting Web is irresponsible.

Surely you can fix this!

If not, then tell us the links ICN the article don't work at the article start.
