Founded by developers Craig and Chris Morrall and chartered accountant Mark Dugdale, Tugger essentially acts as a link between data source(s) and Power BI.

It extracts data from various business tools such as accounting systems like Xero, CRMs like HubSpot, timekeeping apps like Harvest or more general systems like Microsoft Teams. This is then sluiced into Tugger’s data warehouse, ready to integrate with business intelligence reporting tools such as Power BI or Tableau.

Xero users can download Tugger’s pre-built Xero reports. These include rolling 12-month revenue, profit and loss, cash at bank, budget vs actuals and many others. Power BI enables these reports to be customised and added to, as customers see fit.

The system allows users to look at individual data sources or combine different information from across a business for a wider view, enhancing traditional Excel reporting.

Making access to data easier

“Accounting systems like Xero have great open APIs, but not everyone has the time, technical experience or resources to connect it to analytics tools like Power BI,” Tugger co-founder Craig Morrall told AccountingWEB.

“We provide connectors and reports that are off-the-shelf and allow our customers to combine data from, for example, Xero and HubSpot,” continued Morrall. “This allows accounting firms to analyse the profitability of leads from a particular source compared to other sources and run scenarios –  if we get all our leads from this source we get x, if we get them from others, we get y.”

One landscaping group customer used the system to consolidate its Xero data and gain visibility on its group operations. Using Tugger’s interactive reporting functionality, group users can drill down into any entity within a group.

“They were completely running blind,” said co-founder Mark Dugdale “They had no idea where they were from a financial point of view without doing huge amounts of manual data extraction and then working on various pivot tables.”

Dugdale added that the Tugger team is encouraged by the reception from the accounting community and is continuing to work with accounting firms to develop the tool’s functionality and use cases for the profession.
