Taiwanese PC manufacturer Asus has launched the latest model in its ultra-slim laptop range, the U46 Notebook.

The device, powered by a second generation i5 processor from Intel, is less than one inch thick and offers up to 10 hours battery life on a single charge. Featuring 4GB of RAM together with a separate 1GB of video memory underneath an aluminium and brushed metal case, Asus is positioning the U46 as a premium laptop for business users on the move or in the office.

Additional specs include a 500GB hard drive, multiple connectivity ports including HDMI, USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, a 14” display with a ‘hinge-forward’ design for wider viewing angles, a 0.3MP camera, and a 4-in-1 card reader.

The U46 has a suggested retail price of £699.

The U46 is the latest of the so-called ‘ultrabooks’ to arrive at retail this year; similar devices from the likes of Acer and Toshiba were on show at the recently held IFA electronics show in Berlin.

So close

Very impressive hardware and quite an accomplishment at that size & price. Shame they couldn't squeeze a faster HDD or even a SSD in there though. That could make such a difference, especially in providing near-instant boot times.

Boot times

A SSD would have been a good move - still, in 12 months time I'd like to see more of these ultra books available with a touch screen so they can take advantage of Win8...the cold boot time for that OS is amazing!
