One of accountancy's less known stars was pushed into the limelight recently when Deloitte named Systems Union group chief executive Paul Coleman (right) as one of its five directors of the year.

The prize is a regional one and was given to the Farnborough-based executive by Andrew Gordon, senior audit partner at Deloitte in Southampton. The award, said Gordon, was designed to recognise "remarkable people who epitomise all that's best in business".

Coleman trained with Tansley Witt & Co (later part of Arthur Andersen) and after 11 years working as an auditor and audit manager, he moved into the world of commerce, including stints as a financial controller for two Wall Street brokers.
