The tragic events of 11 September highlighted in the most dramatic way possible how vital it is to have a business continuity plan in place for an organisation and how long it can take for them to get back on their feet after a major catastrophe. Thankfully disasters of this type are very rare, but even relatively minor issues can pose great problems to keeping a business operational.

The process of business continuity planning can help to ensure that in the event of a 'disaster', in whatever form that may arise, sufficient steps have been taken to identify the level to which this could impact business operations, what level of disruption can be suffered, and what steps are to be taken in such an event.
