The Tolley Workshops at Accountex this week were all booked up a week before the big exhibition and conference takes place on 14-15 May at ExCel in London Docklands. But anyone disappointed at not getting some of the free CPD on offer still has the chance to sample the company’s content using a new tax reference app.

Each day of the event, six Tolley speakers will hold 45min workshops on topics ranging from this year’s Budget, starting up in practice, a preview of Chartered Tax Adviser training requirements and other issues covered by Tolley’s range of professional training, guidance and reference materials.

“After successful showings in previous years, we tried to put together a set of workshops that offer a sample of what’s available,” said Nick Byrne, the head of strategic marketing for tax, accounting and payroll at Tolley’s owner LexisNexis.

“It’s nice to see the topics we’ve chosen have gone down so well.”

Byrne added than anyone who misses out on the workshop sessions will be able to meet the speakers, who will be spending time on the Tolley stand throughout the event. “We’ve got a stand with comfy seats and a coffee bar, so you’re welcome to catch up with them there.”

Tolley will also be showcasing its new Whillans Calc app at the event (see below). Available from the Google and Apple app stores, Whillans Calc can deliver instant answers to client issues across 17 different areas. There’s more information below, but Tolley will be giving away a number of free access codes for the app at Accountex. But get there early - like the Tolley Workshops, numbers are limited. Some of these will be available on both days of the show, but on a first come, first served basis.

Whillans Calc app (free on both App Store and Google Play)

This app, developed by Tolley, includes 17 downloadable tax calculators.

● All calculators are free to 2014-15 Whillans’s hard copy subscribers using unlock codes
● For those who are not, four calculators are free on the App Store/Google Play: Additional claim to mileage deduction, CT ready reckonerk, Net pay calculator and VAT
● All calculators are available for £29.99 to non-Whillans’s hard copy subscriber

The app is free to initially download, and 13 extra calculators (in addition to the four free ones) can be purchased in-app. Prices range from £2.49 for pensions, salary increase, tax credits and index allowance calculators, to £3.99 for cars and fuel, loans, accommodation, SAYE schemes, IT ready reckoner, NICs, penalties and interest and fuel  benefit Vs pay yourself.

There final app, capital allowances ready reckoner, is available for £4.99.

The app is smooth, sleek and quick (we tested it on an iPhone) and after inputting the relevant details into the relevant calculator, it will also let you view the workings along with the answer.
